Users had recently discovered seemingly unique entries for hit games such as GTA 5 and Elden Ring in Xbox Game Pass. Microsoft is now speaking up: The titles were displayed because of a bug. But that doesn’t stop further speculation.

That would be another bang around the Xbox Game Pass

It was short-lived but caused a great stir. Xbox store users were treated to a seemingly sensational sight on Wednesday: games like GTA 5, Elden Ring and Soul Hackers 2 were suddenly marked as part of Game Pass Ultimate, and use via Xbox cloud gaming was also advertised. That would be a real bang and a strong argument for the gaming offer. But Microsoft quickly curbs the euphoria of the community.

According to the company, the display was due to a bug. « We are aware of an issue where some titles were incorrectly being displayed as available with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, » a Microsoft spokesperson told Eurogamer. « We rolled out a fix and it’s now updated. » A look at the Xbox Store shows that the relevant entries have now been removed.

There’s something in the works

Even if Microsoft is holding back with further information, the incident invites cautious speculation. In June, the company announced plans to expand Xbox cloud gaming to include games outside of Xbox Game Pass later this year. We were talking about « select titles » that users already own or have purchased outside of the Xbox Game Pass library. The assumption is that the mistake happened during the preparation of this offer.

Microsoft is represented at Gamescom 2022, which takes place on August 24th. starts. Announcing the « accidentally » displayed options and games would of course fit perfectly here. And then there’s another clue that got the web puzzling: the Rockstar Games status page lists « Xbox Cloud Gaming » under both Red Dead Online and GTA Online. Are these leftovers from other actions or did you flip the switch for future functions too soon? There will probably be an answer at the end of the month.
