The future of GTA Online is clear: Rockstar will not only continue to provide the multiplayer mode of Grand Theft Auto 5 2021 with new updates and content, but will even make it its own game. This means that GTA Online will be available and playable separately from GTA 5 next year – as publisher Take-Two (via GameSpot) has announced.

GTA Online breaks free from GTA 5
GTA Online Standalone Coming in 2021: A specific release date has not yet been set, the release period has been limited to the second half of 2021. Standalone version of GTA Online not free2play: It is not known how much the release will cost. Take-Two and Rockstar didn’t even explicitly state that the separately available multiplayer mode will cost anything. However, a free campaign for PS5 buyers suggests that in the first three months after the release, Sony customers can download and use GTA Online for free – provided that a PS Plus subscription would probably be available for this.
Exclusive content for PC and NextGen: « New updates » and « exclusive content » are planned for GTA Online players on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X. So PS4 and Xbox One owners are unlikely to get this content. What the new content for GTA Online looks like is currently not known.
GTA Online parallel to GTA 6? Take-Two revealed a few weeks ago that the sooner or later release of GTA 6 does not automatically mean the end of GTA Online. Quite the opposite: according to CEO Strauss Zelnick, GTA 6 and GTA Online should be able to coexist – that both games could run successfully at the same time is not ruled out.
