Red Dead Redemption 2 Hunting Request Guide

Hunting is among the most important activities you can do in Red Dead Redemption 2. Hunting Requests are counted as collectibles, and require players to obtain perfect animal carcasses. To get one, you must perform a perfect kill on a three-star rated animal. Completing Hunting Requests is also required to unlock a trophy/achievement called « It’s Art ».

In this guide, we take a look at the five Hunting Requests and explain how to complete them with ease.

Hunting Request Overview

There are a total of five Hunting Requests, which can be initiated by checking out the posters found in five different post offices found in Valentine, Strawberry, Rhodes, Saint Denis and the Van Horn Trading Post.

Each request tasks you with collecting perfect animal carcasses for several different animals. The first four requests are available right after the beginning of Chapter 2, but the last one only becomes available during the Epilogue, so you will have to complete the main story in order to be able to complete all requests.

Additionally, the final Dead Eye upgrade, which is obtained automatically during Chapter 6, makes completing these requests much easier, as it highlights humans and animals weak points, so we suggest you wait until the end of the game to try to complete them.

For a Hunting Request to be completed, you must pick up the required perfect carcasses and head to the nearest post office to notify Ms. Hobbs of the successful hunt.

Getting Perfect Carcasses

To get a perfect animal carcass from any animal, you must perform a perfect kill on them. Not all animals, however, are good for getting a perfect animal carcass, as only three-star rated animals can leave a perfect carcass behind. Two-star animals sometimes are good for getting a perfect carcass, but chances are extremely low.

To get a perfect kill on any animal, you must kill it with a single shot to the head or any other weak point, like the heart. The final Dead Eye level automatically highlights these weak points, so it’s extremely useful even while hunting. The weapon used to kill the animal is also important: very small animals must be killed with small game arrows, varmints with the Varmint Rifle, medium-sized animals like deer with sidearms or repeaters, big animals like alligators and bears with rifles.

Getting a perfect kill on animals also allows you to harvest perfect skins and pelts, but you won’t be getting any while attempting to complete the Hunting Requests, as the animal cannot be skinned and it must be delivered intact to Ms. Hobbs.

Faster Hunting

Getting animals to spawn can be tricky, and it may take you a long time to find the correct three-star rated animal, but there are some ways to speed up the process.

Herbivore and Predator Baits are extremely useful while hunting, even more so when trying to complete the Hunting Requests, as they make animals appear in the location where the bait is set in a short amount of time. Since all animals required for these requests are herbivores, stock up on Herbivore and Potent Herbivore Baits. Potent Herbivore Baits are not available in shops, and can only be crafted with 1 x Vanilla Flower,1 x Violet Snowdrop, 1 x Bay Bolete right from the beginning of Chapter 2.

Even with baits, it may take a long time for the correct animal to appear, but there’s an interesting workaround that makes at least one three-star rated animal appear in a specific area. While searching for any particular animal, make a manual save and reload it if the animal you need to kill isn’t of the best rating, as the game spawns at least one three-star animal each time a save is loaded.

If you are really unlucky and cannot find three-star rated animals easily, there’s a way to make even one and two-star rated animals leave a perfect carcass behind. Hunt the Legendary Buck and craft the Legendary Buck Antler Trinket to receive a very useful permanent perk which increases the quality of carcasses and pelts from killed animals.

Valentine Hunting Request

The first Hunting Request that can be completed in the game is the one that can be started in Valentine. Head to the post office in the town, find the poster and get hunting: you need to get a Perfect Squirrel Carcass and an Adult Rabbit Perfect Carcass.

Squirrels are found in the northern areas of the map, but they tend to spawn a little more often in the northeastern areas, to the north of Annesburg. To make them appear more often, use a Herbivore Bait near forested areas. To get a perfect kill, you can use either small game arrows or the Varmint Rifle.

Rabbits are extremely common and can be found pretty much all over the map, so you won’t have much trouble finding a three-star rated rabbit. To get a perfect kill on them, you must use the Varmint Rifle.

Strawberry Hunting Request

The second Hunting Request can be started once you’ve received the reward for the first hunting request. When you go to any one of the post offices after 24 hrs of delivering the request, you will get the reward for the first list as well as the next list. To complete it, you must get a Perfect Cardinal Carcass, a Perfect Rat Carcass, and a Perfect Woodpecker Carcass.

The Cardinal is a bird, so using baits will not make them spawn. They are quite common, however, so you shouldn’t have too many problems finding one. In case you are not lucky, you can find them directly to the south of Valentine, in the Heartlands, and to the west of the town, near the river. To get a Perfect Kill, you must use small game arrows or the Varmint Rifle.

Rats are also extremely common and can be found pretty much everywhere. The best locations to find them are caves, like the one that can be found behind the waterfall of Elysian Pool. To get a perfect kill, use the small game arrows or the Varmint Rifle.

Rhodes Hunting Request

The third Hunting Request can be started after delivering the second list and getting the reward for it. To complete it, you must get Perfect Chipmunk, Oriole, Robin and Opossum carcasses.

Chipmunks spawn in the areas to the north of the map, just like squirrels. They also appear to the south of Rhodes, right to the east of Braithwaite Manor. Use small game arrows and the Varmint Rifle to get a perfect kill on them.

Orioles are among the rarest birds in Red Dead Redemption 2 so it may take some time for you to find one. Orioles spawn more often in the area between the « N » and « E » in New Hanover on the map, and on the western shore of Flat Iron Lake. Use small game arrows or the Varmint Rifle to get a perfect kill.

Robins are rare, but thankfully a bit more common than Orioles. They can be found easily near Braithwaite Manor and in the areas directly to the west of Annesburg. Use the small game arrows or the Varmint Rifle to get a perfect kill.

Opossums are among the rarest varmints in the game and only spawn in a few select locations, like the western shore of Flat Iron Lake, the area a little to the south of the gap between the « E » and « M » in Lemoyne and in the area in the gap between the « R » and « I » in Ambarino on the map. Like for all varmints, the Varmint Rifle is the weapon to use to get a perfect kill. They can be found at night time.

Saint Denis Hunting Request

The fourth Hunting Request is started after the completion of the fourth hunting list and getting its reward through the post office. To complete this request, you must get Perfect Songbird, Sparrow, Toad, Bullfrog, and Skunk carcasses.

The Songbird is among the most common birds in the game, and it can spawn pretty much everywhere. The best hunting spot for it is in the area directly to the west of Annesburg. Use small game arrows or the Varmint Rifle to get a perfect kill.

Sparrows are just as common as songbirds and can be found all over the world. If you’re looking for a nice hunting spot, the western side of Braithewaite Manor, near the lake, is an excellent one. Use small game games arrows or the Varmint Rifle for the perfect kill.

Toads are only found near rivers, swamps, and lakes. The best hunting spot is the island found on the eastern side of Flat Iron Lake, but they are quite common in the swamps near Saint Denis. Use the Varmint Rifle to get a perfect kill.

Bullfrogs look a lot like toads, but they are different animals. They can only be found in the swamps to the north and west of Saint Denis. Use the Varmint Rifle to get a perfect kill.

Skunks are very common in the game and can be found pretty much everywhere, but they appear more often in the northeastern corner of the map, to the north of Annesburg. The Varmint Rifle is the weapon to use to get a perfect kill. They have a higher chance of spawning at night time.

The fifth and final Hunting Request is only available after completing the first part of the Epilogue. To begin it, you must have completed the four hunting requests previously. To complete it, you must get Perfect Cedar Waxwing, Bat, Blue Jay, Crow, and Beaver carcasses.

The Cedar Waxwing is an extremely rare bird that can only be found in two areas: near the Dakota River directly to the northeast of Wallace Station and directly to the east of Riggs Station in West Elizabeth. Use the Varmint Rifle to get a perfect kill.

Bats can only be found inside caves, so head to the cave behind the waterfall in Elysian Pool to find one. You must use the small game arrow to get a perfect kill.

Blue Jays are extremely rare in Red Dead Redemption 2, and can only be found in a specific area located right on the « N » in New Hanover on the map. Use the Varmint Rifle to get a perfect kill.

Crows are the exact opposite of Blue Jays, as they can be found pretty much everywhere. Use small game arrows or the Varmint Rifle to get a perfect kill.

Beavers can only be found near lakes. The best hunting spot is near the lake to the west of Strawberry. Use the Varmint Rifle to get a perfect kill.

Ending

Once you have completed all of the requests you will be sent an invite through the mail. Read the letter and head to the marked location on the map to get the Squirrel Statue as a reward, which must be put above the fireplace at the Beecher’s Hope Ranch in New Austin.

The statue is mysteriously stolen several times, and you must recover it six times to get a related trophy/achievement called It’s Art. Once the statue has been recovered and put on the fireplace again, you must wait 24 hours for it to be stolen again.

After disappearing, the statue can be found in John’s bedroom, inside the chimney in the same room, inside a chest found in the loft above the kitchen, inside the wheelbarrow found next to the barn with sheep, inside a chest on the second floor of the barn, and on Mount Shann, to the north of Strawberry and right between the « S » and « T » in Elizabeth on the map.

Statue Location 1

The first statue location is the chest inside John’s room.

Statue Location 2

The second location is inside the chimney in John’s room.

Statue Location 3

The third location is the chest inside the loft above the kitchen. There is a ladder inside the kitchen leading up to the loft.

Statue Location 4

The fourth statue location is the wheelbarrow next to the barn in the sheep pen.

Statue Location 5

The fifth time, it can be found in a chest on the second floor of the barn.

Statue Location 6

The sixth and the final location is not around Beecher’s Hope. This last one will require you to travel a little bit. You can find the statue on top of Mount Shann.

Once the statue has been recovered for the sixth and final time, Hunting Requests will finally be complete and the It’s Art trophy/achievement unlocked.
