WoW Classic 39 Twink Paladin Guide

In the Arena, Paladins are one of the most potent classes to solo with.  They probably have the highest level of survivability, as they are the only class in the game that can wear mail armor and heal at this level.  They also have access to devastating damage dealing with their Retribution abilities.  In a groups setting, Paladins often find a warm welcome, not only for their ability to heal, but for their adaptability.  They can tank, they can heal and they can deal damage with the best of them.  While not as versatile as the Druid, or even the Shaman (who can choose to deal damage from a distance), the Paladin excels at whatever role they choose to fill.

Races

Paladins only have two choices of race and can only be played on the Alliance faction.  Horde players, or those with Horde mains, may wish to either level an Alliance character before trying to Twink a Paladin, or check out the Shaman class.  If you’re not quite sure about races in general, check out the Races page here for a more generalized, lore aspect to the denizens of Azeroth.  Following, is a short description of the racial traits that are useful in PvP, which are also available to both Alliance races that can play Paladins.

Alliance

  • Dwarf:  Dwarves can counter the Bleed, Poison and Disease effects that some classes wield with Stoneform.  The ability also offers a short term Armor bonus which is great.  Frost Resistance is good for countering frost Mages and the damage from Hunter’s traps.  Most players would not even mention Find Treasure, but a lot of your BiS gear is going to cost you, so the more gold that you can line your pockets with, the better off you’ll be.  Not to mention that you might just find a piece of your gear in a chest.
  • Human:  Mace Specialization and Sword Specialization will be pretty helpful, especially early on, as many of your best weapons will likely be one or two handed maces and swords.  Perception is a good edge against Rogues in Battlegrounds and sometimes in the arena.  The Human Spirit will help with health and Mana regeneration, which is important for a Paladin.  Like the Dwarf’s Find Treasure, Diplomacy might not seem worth mentioning, but anything that will help you pinch pennies is a good thing and some of the most important BiS items can only be purchased from reputation based vendors.

Professions

There are a lot of professions to choose from, which can make deciding which ones to go with hard.  Fortunately, one of the coolest professions is also an absolute necessity for a Twink of any class.  Engineering.  There are a plethora of gadgets, devices and bombs that are extremely useful within Battlegrounds and you won’t want to miss out on them.

While Engineering is a necessity, your other Profession is also important.  Which ones you’ll be interested in will largely depend on your class.

What follows is a description of each of the Professions that should be of interest to a level 39 Twink Paladin and why.

Engineering

For Twinks of any class, this profession is an absolute must-have.  Along with all of the engineering gadgets and doodads you get before reaching 230 in engineering, there are some seriously fantastic items at this level that are of extreme use in PvP.  Make sure you get all of them.

The Major Recombobulator is especially useful for countering the Crowd Control (CC) effects of Polymorph.  Other items of note are the   Alarm-O-Bot, which can help in detecting Rogues and Druids and the Dark Iron Bomb, which is the absolute best bomb in early Classic WoW, with the most damage and longest CC duration.  There are also three energy reflectors; Gyrofreeze Ice Reflector, Hyper-Radiant Flame Reflector and Ultra-Flash Shadow Reflector, which all reflect their type of damage for 5 seconds.  This is extremely useful and can quickly turn the tables on any caster in the game.  Finally, there is the Arcane Bomb, which absorbs mana and does half of what is absorbed as damage to anyone in range.

All of these items are incredibly useful in PvP and are the best engineering has to offer at this level.  Not to mention all of the fun fireworks and pet companions you can make.

Enchanting

Enchanting is probably the best choice for players who are not supporting their Twink with another character.  It has few expensive reagents that must be truly gathered, most being products of disenchanting items you are already likely to pick up.  It also offers lucrative selling opportunities with the many materials you will acquire from breaking down all of the Green and Blue items you do not need.  It can also offset the cost of getting your own enchantments some, as higher level enchanters are sometimes on the lookout for lower level materials.

Alchemy

If you are being supplied herbs and reagents by another character, then Alchemy can be an extremely useful Profession to endeavor upon.  The ability to simply create the many potions and elixirs that offer decided advantages in PvP at this bracket, instead of having to go shop for them, almost pays for itself.  Alchemy can also be a great way to make money, especially if the reagents and materials can be acquired cheaply.

Blacksmithing

This might not be a bad choice if you can level it quickly and get some decent low level leveling gear, but only if you are also funded by a miner.

Other Professions

The truth is that other than the above professions, no others are at all viable for a Paladin.  Tailoring, Leatherworking,  and Skinning should all simply be avoided, because none of them are of any use to someone wearing mail at this level.  Herbalism  would only be useful in Alchemy were your first choice of Profession, but since you’re going to take Engineering, avoid Herbalism as well.

That being said, you might think about picking up Alchemy, Leatherworking and Tailoring simply to sell the high level components and transmutes that only these Professions can provide.  Alchemists can transmute metals with recipes like Recipe: Transmute Arcanite, Leatherworkers can craft the Cured Rugged Hide and Tailors can use Pattern: Mooncloth to purify Felcloth.

Secondary Skills

CookingCooking has but one benefit to any Twink at any level bracket.  The Well Fed Buff.  The food that offers the highest possible Well Fed bonus at this level is Spider Sausage, the recipe for which can be purchased from virtually any standard Cooking trainer.  Another fun and useful food the cooks can make at this level is Dragonbreath Chili, the recipe for which can be purchased from Helenia Olden (Alliance) or Ogg’marr (Horde) in Duskwallow Marsh.  It can also be purchased from Super-Seller 680 in Desolace.

First Aid:  The only thing to worry about here is to get your First Aid maxed as high as it will go, so that you can use the Heavy Runecloth Bandage, which can heal you almost completely full with just one bandage.  To do this, you will need the three books Expert First Aid – Under Wraps, Manual: Heavy Silk Bandage and Manual: Mageweave Bandage.  The only trouble is that, because you still can’t get your Secondary Skills up to 300 yet, you’ll have to find someone to craft the bandages for you.  Alternatively, you could simply purchase them off of the AH.

Fishing:  This skill is not as important at this level bracket, but it’s still a great way to increase your income, especially while you’re bored and waiting around near some water.  Take any opportunity you can to fish, because each time you fish is a chance to catch a rare fish that can earn you some good money.  It’s also not a bad way to get Cooking and Alchemy reagents to increase those skills.

Spells and Abilities

Paladin abilities, like so many other classes abilities, break down into three basic groups.  These groups are Holy, Retribution and Protection, and they correlate to their different talent trees as well.  At level 39, some of the Paladin’s abilities are quite potent, and whether you are attacking enemies, protecting allies, or healing them, you are going to notice that you’re pretty good at whatever you choose to do.

The following is a description of all of the abilities available to a Paladin at level 39 and some tips on how to use them best.

  • Seal of Wisdom: This seal is absolutely amazing for when you are low on mana and down to using a basic attack. Remember, only one seal can be active on a Paladin at a time.
  • Holy Light: This is the Paladin’s main healing spell and heals for a middling amount for the mana.
  • Redemption: Not the best resurrection spell, but definitely the one that gets used the most, since Paladins are far more likely to survive a battle in PvP than anyone else.
  • Exorcism: This spell appears on this list only because it is effective against the demon pets of Warlocks and so should not be forgotten about.
  • Seal of Righteousness: While still a Holy spell, this is the old stand by for a Retribution Paladin and great ability for Paladins who want to use two handed weapons.
  • Flash of Light: This is a nice little fast healing spell, that is just a touch more Mana efficient than Holy Light.
  • Blessing of Wisdom: The last of the lighter touch holy spells at this level, Blessing of Wisdom is highly sought after by all classes that use Mana, but in particular Clothies who are Mana dependant.
  • Consecration: A great Area of Attack (AoE) spell, of which the Paladin has few. Consecration does Holy damage to all foes within striking distance and then some for kind of a while.
  • Seal of Light:
  • Lay on Hands: This handy spell is fantastic for when the chips are down. When you’re close to out of Mana and a friend is low on health, use this spell and take all but a Warrior back to full health. This is particularly useful in situations where you have or are an alternate healer.
  • Purify: Simple enough, right? Removes poison and disease. Good to counter Rogue’s poisons and Hunter’s Sting abilities. Not much else use in PvP at this level.
  • Fire Resistance Aura: Allows you to protect your allies from the damaging effects of multiple classes. A really great aura for lowering all around damage.
  • Divine Shield: This spell is one of the best in the Paladin’s arsenal. It gives you a short break, during which you can cast healing spells, pop a potion, or elixir, or simply run away without being interrupted.
  • Frost Resistance Aura: The same as Fire Resistance Aura, but with a narrower field of effectiveness, as only the Shaman and Mage do frost damage, as well as the occasional Hunter trap.
  • Divine Intervention: This spell can sometimes mean the difference between victory and defeat. You sacrifice yourself to keep an ally from harm, if this ally is chosen tactically, they can either regroup and defeat your enemies, or escape danger and return to rez you in return.
  • Devotion Aura:  This is a Paladin ability that no one will complain about and that most players want more anyway.  Essentially giving your entire party the equivalent of a Mail chest piece in armor tends to be helpful.
  • Shadow Resistance Aura: This spell is fantastic when in a group and fighting against Warlocks and Shadow Priests, but especially Warlocks, who delight in filling a battlefield with as much Damage over Time (DoT) shadow damage as possible. Fun fact: More Horde races can play as Warlocks than Alliance races. Coincidence? Probably not.
  • Hammer of Justice: An instant 4 second stun? Yes please.
  • Divine Protection: This spell keeps you from taking any kind of physical damage for 8 seconds. Giving you time to heal, pop an elixir, change weapons, or anything else you can do in 8 seconds.
  • Blessing of Protection: This is a similar spell to Divine Protection, only you can cast it upon your allies. This is a literal lifesaving spell if your main Healer is in danger of death. Pop it on them and then they or you can get them back to full.  It can also be used to counter certain types of CC, like Sap.
  • Seal of Justice: This is a decent alternative to Hammer of Justice, which might not cost quite as much Mana. It also has a chance of keeping an opponent stunned for longer, with successive attacks.
  • Concentration Aura: This is a great aura to have active if you have a large amount of Casters in your party or battle group. It’s also not bad for a casting heavy Paladin themselves.
  • Devotion Aura: This is a Paladin ability that no one will complain about and that most players want more anyway. Essentially giving your entire party the equivalent of a Plate chest piece in armor tends to be helpful.
  • Blessing of Kings: If no one asks specifically for a particular blessing, always have this active. This spell is not only fantastic in its own right, it also stacks will allother stat increase class spells, including Mark of the Wild.
  • Blessing of Freedom: This Blessing is only situational in its usefulness. Use when you suspect an opponent of preparing to use any kind of CC.
  • Retribution Aura: One of the best Auras to have active, if you are tanking, or just taking a lot of damage. Anything that makes your opponents pay for every bit of damage they do to you is where it’s at.
  • Seal of the Crusader: Absolutely fantastic for just dolling out raw damage and with each swing keeping the duration going, it can last through a battle.
  • Blessing of Might: Highly sought after by all Warriors, Rogues and the occasional Druid, this spell will make your friends amongst those who do Melee damage.
  • Sanctity Aura: This spell is awesome if you have more than one Paladin in your party, or a couple of Priests who aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty.
  • Seal of Command: Not a bad Seal to use, in general. There are better ones, of course, but the chance for so much extra damage on each swing is good.
  • Judgement You will be using this ability a lot. It releases the charges of your seals and is the only way to do so. Always have this one on your tool bar.

Talents

Within this bracket, things get a lot more straight-forward for Paladins.  You will choose a role and, more than likely, you will stick with that role.  Make no mistake, there is more than enough room for variation and customization here, but generally, you’ll want to stick with a given role, because you’ll generally be more powerful that way.  That being said, an off-tank/healer can be one of the more effective Hybrid roles, so mess around.Below are some of the more streamlined and popular builds for Paladin Twinks.

This is the standard Holy spec build and is pretty much centered around healing. Healer Paladins are sometimes even more effective in PvP than some of the more popular healing classes, because their ability to where heavier armor and their higher melee damage output make them more likely to survive.

Wow Classic Twink Talent Build Images Paladin Holy

This is also a Holy build, but it strikes a balance between healing and support by adding Blessing of Kings.

Wow Classic Twink Talent Build Images Paladin Holy Bok

The protection build focuses on defense and support, increasing your armor and your efficacy with a shield, while also improving and adding a number of blessings that help you and your entire party.

Wow Classic Twink Talent Build Images Paladin Prot

Easily the most popular build for PvP Paladins, the Retribution spec focuses on increasing your ability to do damage with your Seals and Judgement and using two handed weapons. It also offers a slight mobility advantage with Pursuit of Justice.

Wow Classic Twink Talent Build Images Paladin Retribution

These are again, the most straight forward builds and represent the most popular choices. You might think that you can do better in choosing your talents and you might be right. If you do think so, take a look at the Talent Calculator and see what you come up with. A really fun build might be to focus purely on your melee damage and draw from all three trees. If you do it right, you can wind up with a crit rating that rivals some Rogues. Give it a shot!

BiS Gear

Gear is important for all classes and is usually one of the most difficult aspects of building a Twink of any level.  For Paladins, your gear is going to depend somewhat on your spec, but generally you are looking to increase Strength, Stamina and Intellect in that order.  Though, if you are playing a DPS Paladin, you might get a lot of benefit from Agility, as it increases critical strike rating.

Acquiring all of this BiS gear won’t be easy and it is advised that you get financial backing from a Main to get the items from the AH, which will make the task much easier.  Listed below are all of your BiS gear slot items and how, or where to get them. Good Luck!

To help you find the gear you need each the lists below have been separated into Holy, Protection and Retribution.  Just click the button for which spec you are going for, or the one you used most and the guide will show the appropriate gear.

Enchantments

The enchantments for your gear are almost as important as the gear itself.  Make sure to get all of the best enchantments for each gear slot item that can be enchanted.  If your Main is not an enchanter, then acquiring these enchantments will be expensive, so keep that in mind.  Here are all of the best enchantments for a level 39 Twink Paladin.

Buffs

There are a plethora of buffs to be had at this level and some of them are incredibly useful.  If you’ve taken Alchemy, you’ll be able to acquire most of these, fairly easily.  Otherwise, you can get them through other players who are Alchemists, or simply from the AH. Some of them are often sold by vendors in a limited quantity as well.

Elixirs

Remember that you can only have one Battle and one Guardian Elixir active at a time.

Battle Eilixirs

Guardian Elixirs

  • Elixir of Greater Intellect: A very good choice if you can get it, as it offers an even higher bonus to Intellect than Arcane Intellect at this level.
  • Elixir of Fortitude:  Not a single character in all of WoW has ever complained about having more health.  You shouldn’t either.
  • Mighty Troll’s Blood Potion:  This one is great to pop right before a long fight.  It helps mitigate damage to you and let’s your Healer take it a bit easier.
  • Elixir of Greater Defense:  More armor is always a good thing, especially in these quantities.
  • Gift of Arthas: Hard to come by and somewhat situational with respect to the resistance, but definitely worth the defensive proc.  Being able to disease opponents is very useful in PvP.
  • Elixir of Water Walking:  This one might only be useful when running away from something, but when you can walk on water and your opponents can’t you’ll be glad you bought this.

Potions

  • Lesser Stoneshield Potion: One thousand extra armor?  Yes, you can easily find a situation where this is useful.
  • Invisibility Potion: Makes you invisible.  What’s not to love?
  • Swiftness Potion: No matter what bracket you’re in, no matter what class you play, this potion will never not be useful in some way in PvP and in CTF it is invaluable.
  • Restorative Potion: Expensive, but worth the price and extremely utilitarian.  You can just keep this in your back pocket just in case and rest easy, knowing you have an answer for almost every debuff.  Good to hold on to these to use yourself and save your spells for allies.
  • Jungle Remedy: You might have to spend a lot of time farming these, or a bit of gold buying them, but they are worth it.
  • Magic Resistance Potion:   If 50 resistance in all schools of magic doesn’t seem like enough to you, you are wrong.  This potion is perfect for when every caster on the field is flinging different colored light at each other.
  • Dreamless Sleep Potion:  Makes you vulnerable for awhile but pretty much completely restores your health and mana.  Good to use right after some kind of mass CC has just occurred, like Psychic Scream, or Fear.  Also, good for when everyone else is back to full health and you need to get back to 100%.
  • Wildvine Potion:  Kind of a gamble, but might be worth having for when things are really down and out.
  • Superior Healing Potion:  The healing potion is a staple of adventurers everywhere.  Good for you, or and ally.  Use it in good health.  Heheh.
  • Superior Healing Draught:  Not as effective as the above, but plentiful and cheap.  You can only use them in BGs though.
  • Greater Mana Potion: An absolute must have for all casters.  Make sure you have at least a couple of these before ever even heading out.

Scrolls

Use all of them if you are alone, because they are cheap and why not?

Team Buffs

Class buffs are also important.  Be sure you get the one that fits what you are doing.  Arcane Intellect if you’re doing a lot of caster damage, or healing and Power Word: Fortitude for everything else.   Mark of the Wild is a fantastic buff as well., and don’t forget about all of your own amazing buffs from the spells and abilities section.

Other Consumables

  • Rumsey Rum Black Label: Being a little tipsy is a small price to pay for an extra 15 Stamina.
  • Dragonbreath Chili: As stated above, this is a great little added boon that you can get easily if you cooking skill is high enough.
  • Spider Sausage: Again, make sure you have some of this sausage before heading out there.  The well fed buff shouldn’t be ignored.

You now know all that you need to create the perfect level 39 Twink Paladin.  Make sure to stick with the gear that works for your chosen role and spec.  Armed with these weapons of righteousness, and endowed with the wisdom of the light, go now and bring ruin to the wicked!  Have fun!
